Preparing for Satyanarayan Puja at home

A calm checklist of what to gather, written for a kitchen in Toronto as much as a home in Kathmandu.

Satyanarayan Puja is the household puja of gratitude. It is offered to Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan — the lord of truth — and it is one of the most widely performed pujas in Nepali and North Indian Hindu households, done on auspicious days, at the completion of something significant, or simply to mark a moment of thankfulness in the family.

Preparing for it does not require a specialist or an elaborate setup. What it requires is a clean space, a focused hour or two to gather what is needed, and the willingness to let the ritual unfold at its own pace.

The space and altar

Begin with a clean, quiet corner of a room. A low wooden platform — a chowki — covered with a clean yellow or red cloth makes the foundation of the altar. Place the image or small idol of Lord Satyanarayan (Lord Vishnu) at the centre.

You will need a copper, brass, or silver kalash — a round-bottomed pot that represents the auspicious vessel. Fill it with clean water, place mango leaves around its rim, and set a coconut on top. This kalash becomes the ceremonial presence of Vishnu during the puja.

What to gather

For the altar and flame: a diya, ghee or sesame oil, cotton wicks, incense sticks, camphor (kapur), and a small hand bell.

For offerings: fresh flowers, tulsi leaves (essential for Vishnu puja), betel leaves and betel nuts, turmeric powder, red kumkum, sandalwood paste, raw rice mixed with turmeric (akshat), and a small amount of Gangajal or clean water.

For panchamrit — the sacred bathing mixture: milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar. These five are mixed together.

For the prasad: sheera, a semolina halwa made from sooji, ghee, sugar, and milk, with mashed banana folded in at the end.

A note on substitutions

Families living abroad often cannot source everything on a traditional list, and this is fine. Mango leaves can be replaced with other clean leaves or omitted. Gangajal is available in Indian grocery stores in most diaspora cities; if unavailable, clean water with intention serves the same purpose.

The day of the puja

Prepare the sheera and the panchamrit before the puja begins so there is no rushing later. Bathe and wear clean clothes. The puja itself takes roughly ninety minutes when conducted at an unhurried pace. It is designed to be shared: the more family that gathers, the more complete the ritual feels.
